Skutros

“Hearing a no faced nomad laugh while chewing on leg bone is something you don’t unsee.” Bob the Human

Skultros
The Skultros are a Spawned Race, born from the Behemoth Luodo. They largely live among their nomadic village, Luodan, and are somewhat rare outside of their home. They are the care takers of the Skull-Jacks, the creatures under the protection of Luodo. Skultros are scavengers largely. They have a co-dependent relationship with the Skull-Jacks, who are predatory hunters.

The Skultros have been around since the beginning of recorded history, like many of the races. Their reputation among the other nomadic tribes is that they are a fun, free people. This was largely born from the fact that the Skultros are incredibly receptive to any offer for food, relaxation, or festivities. And the Skultros themselves would never turn anyone away for festivities they themselves hold.

Their reputation within Oasis, on the other hand, is that they are a pestersome race that thrives on trickery and thievery. This is due to their tendency to scavenge or hunt any Oasis persons who steps off the roads that grant them protection. Skultros use a wide variety of tactics to lure individuals or entire caravans away from the safety of the road so that they can be attacked without invoking the protections of the Law of the Road. And when Skultros visit or live within Oasis, they are often known for assuming things that are not locked up, bolted down, or otherwise protected are fair game for anyone.

Physical Appearance
Skultros are a bipedal, mammalian race. They stand around 4-5 feet tall, with males being on the taller end of that spectrum, females on the shorter end. The most prominent feature of them is the bare skull upon their heads, which many think is simply a mask that is put on them at birth, that they grow into and fuse with. Rather, it is a product of their spawning, and is an inherent part of their anatomy. They have eyes deep within the skull that are highly suited for night and dark vision. They do not have external ears, rather just simple holes hidden beneath the exterior portion of the skull. Their mouth is made of two layers of teeth, the first being the visible, exterior ones making up the skull, followed by the interior layer as well. Their skin is often dark hues of red or brown, and has an extremely tough, dense, leathery feel to it that prevents evaporation.

Psychology
Skultros are a small, usually tightknit community. They tend to be very protective of their own, their Skull-Jacks, and their Behemoth. However, they are intensely curious beings, and are always watching, learning. They do have a tendency to try and circumvent things such as laws and culturally respected norms, largely outside of the nomadic communities. Being inherently scavengers, they do not regularly waste anything that becomes theirs, and have no qualms about asking, or simply taking, that which they think was disposed of.

Reproduction
Skultros practice traditional mammalian sexual reproduction. Females ovulate predominately in the season of water, giving birth in the season of wind. They give birth to litters, typically 2-6 children at a time.

Aging
Skultros are children from 0-13, when they begin to mature sexually. They stop developing mentally and physically around 20, and can live up to around 50 years of age.

Abilities
Low-Light Vision – Being a predominately nocturnal race, the Skultros are well developed at seeing at night and in low light settings, as easily as others might see in the day. Their day vision is typically unhindered due to the shade on their eyes from their skulls.

Desert Adapted Skin – Thick, leathery skin helps to prevent evaporation of water, and also makes it more difficult for dull blades to pierce them.

Bone Consumption – Being scavengers, Skultros acquire the majority of their nutrition from bones, carapace, shells, hair, and other similar things. While they can eat traditional foods, doing so often leads to mild digestion issues such as gas.

Locust

“Their kind never creates, never grows. They are takers by nature and forever will be.” Bob the Human

Locust
Locusts are one of the races considered to be Beastmen, and are almost universally viewed as a scourge across the sands of Owasiwa. Everyone knows the story of their history, as it is one that has spread wide among the nomadic tribes as cautionary tale. This ravenous, warhungry race was born from the death of their Behemoth, a death they inflicted upon it.

Before Locusts rose to the rank of Beastmen, they were simply wild, insectoid monsters like many others. They were a seasonal predator, showing up to the same areas over a many years cycle, and eat all plant and animal life they could find, before mating and hibernating. Different hives had different cycles and territories, but all answered to their Behemoth, Pikra.

However, as the various peoples of Owasiwa came into existence, and thus occasionally became the prey of the Locusts, it seemed the creatures were growing wiser. They began to use the weapons people used on them, storing them within their hives so the next generations could use them. Generation after generation of raiding the lands caused them to grow stronger and stronger.

But the nomadic tribes and the other Behemoths were not willing to let these beasts grow out of hand. Balance was tipping away from Pikra’s control. The tribes began fighting back managing to destroy all but the final hive where Pikra lived. This was the largest, and most well defended hive of the lot, and the Envoys that came to speak with Pikra, to force them to recognize the natural balance of the world.

Pikra knew their words to be true, and attempted to relay this to the Locusts. However, none of these beasts were Envoys, none of these creatures could be communicated with by anyone else. Upon hearing Pikra telling them to seemingly go against their own very nature, the Locusts took up arms once more, and fought en masse against their own Behemoth. Each Locust in the hive took bite after bite out of their queen until the Behemoth was dead and destroyed.

Normally, when a Behemoth is killed, another is born from the creatures they come from. However, it seemed that the Locusts, via their consumption of their Behemoth, had transcended to the communal sentience, no longer required a Behemoth.

Horrified, the nomadic tribes have long since vowed an eternal war against the Locusts. They’ve managed to keep the Locusts contained to a single, massive colony south of Oasis. However, they’ve never managed to successfully lay siege to the hive which they’ve come to name Oy Pikra, which loosely translates as “Pikra’s Folly”. The hive contains millions of Locusts, and while most are simple drones and no smarter than any typical creature, it has many that are of higher sentience.

Locusts continue to be a relentless threat, on the nomadic tribes, on the outlying territories, on Oasis, particularly on their farms. The Locusts no longer follow predictable patterns of when or where they will raid. Their tactics have shown an increased understanding of military movements. Wherever they raid, they kill or kidnap as many beings as they can, as well as any organic matter and weapons. They have thrown thousands of their kind to capture or kill a hundred. They do not leave behind bodies, not of their own kind nor of enemies, for that would be wasting food.

Physical Appearance
Locusts come in a wide variety, depending on which Brood they are from. They always come with two arms, two legs, a tail, four wings, all heavily insectoid, typically in a desert oriented color scheme. They range in height from about 4 feet to 5.5 feet at a maximum. There is no difference in appearance of male and females.

Psychology
The vast majority of Locusts do not have the intelligence necessary to be considered as having a psychological profile. These are typically referred to as Drones. They do all of the grunt work necessary, without protest, as deemed by the Royalty within their Brood. However, it seems all of the members of the Royalty have achieved sentience and intelligence. It is commonly believed that these Royals are descendants of the Locusts that ate the most portions of Pikra.

Within each Brood, there is a structured hierarchy, one that is greatly violent and turbulent. Among the Royals, whichever female is considered the strongest and smartest, typically by slaying and eating any rivals, is the Queen. The Queen rules the Brood. The Brood’s primary responsibilities are the protection and feeding of the Queen. The Queen requires incredibly vast amounts of food in order to begin reproducing. She selects from among the male Royals a number of Princes to be her mates. Princes compete for the Queen’s time so as to produce more heirs and grow their own forces within the Brood. This leads to an incredibly cut throat, backstabbing political society within Oy Pikra, to which only the victor has any real power.

Reproduction
Once a Queen has mated through sexual reproduction, her body grows and distorts to roughly a hundred times its normal size, a massive beast, as she fills with eggs. Once the eggs are ready, she will lay them within her chambers.

Aging
The eggs hatch after 1 season from being laid, creating small grubs. These grubs are cared for by the lesser female Royals. After a year, they go through a cocoon based metamorphosis to become the proper Locust shape. From there, they take another year to achieve full maturity. Drone Locusts live to around 4-5 years. Royals typically make it to about 10 years. Due to the strain from laying so many eggs, Queens rarely last more than 2 years of egg laying.

Abilities
Flight – Able to fly long distances without stopping.
Organic Consumption – Can eat any organic material safely.

Languages
Only the Royals speak, Drones receive their orders via pheromones.

L’kustia – A language largely made of insectoid clicking is the language the Royals use amongst themselves.

Tk’abbir

“Whoever heard of a race of shared souls? Ridiculous. Nomadic propaganda if you ask me.” Bob the Human

Tk’abbir
Tk’abbir have been in Owasiwa from the moment the first souls found their first bodies. Tk’abbir, sometimes called Ticks or Teaks by others, are a bit of an anomaly among races. Tk’abbir are a spawned race, and their kind continue to spawn fairly regularly around plant oriented Behemoths and densely planted areas in general. Wild Tk’abbir, as called by outsiders, are when two completely normal plants in proximity of each other begin to develop a basic sentience. It is not clear what triggers this but it is a common enough phenomenon. As the sentience in the two plants grows, a bond forms between them, linking their souls together. Eventually, sometime when their sentience reaches a maturity that is somewhat equivalent to that of an adult in other races, an internal choice is felt in both of the plants. The choice always feels roughly the same among the pairs; Stay exactly as you are, or make a sacrifice for growth and freedom. If one member of the pair chooses to make the sacrifice, the choice is made for both. This choice causes their bound souls to merge into one, and the additional energy given off by this merger causes a rapid growth into new physical forms. The pair will take on forms similar to their type of plant, but will grow and become mobile. One member of the pair, the sacrificing pair, will grow physically larger and stronger than the other, but in doing so, loses much of their intelligence. The other member will grow more intelligent, gain the ability to speak, but be physically smaller and weaker.

Tk’abbir, being of one soul, cannot have secrets from one another. Their minds are always in unison, though many still choose to communicate physically with one another. Being so joined, if one dies, both die. Tk’abbir are not very common in Oasis, but are fairly common along the Lapis River, and extremely common within the Viridescent Shield.

Physical Appearance
Tk’abbir always come in pairs, though they do not have to have come from the exact same type of plant as each other. They will always have obvious physical characteristics of their plant origin, but their structural forms are as wide and varied as plants themselves. Some might be bipedal, others, quadrupedal, some might fly, some swim. It is also common for Tk’abbir’s appearance to change based on seasons, if such occurs in their origin plant species.

Psychology
There isn’t much terribly in common among the Tk’abbir beyond the desire to live among the heavily planted areas of Owasiwa and unyielding loyalty to their other halves. Beyond that, they are terribly varied and differing. Many of them in the Viridescent Shield will often be a bit harsher and battle hungry due to the nature of the environment, while those living along the Lapis River might be more peaceful. It should be noted that Tk’abbir pairs do not refer to themselves as we to outsiders, but always will amongst themselves.

Reproduction
Those called Wild Tk’abbir spawn as they gain sentience, but Tk’abbir can also mate among their kind too. Tk’abbir can have male and female sexes, as well as being hermaphroditic. Tk’abbir mating is an intimate affair involving at least two separate pairs, but can include more. It can come in many differing styles, depending on the physical structures of the individual Tk’abbir, though pollination and sexual reproduction are among the most common. Once fertilization is reached, seeds will be deposited into fertile soil and watched over by the parents. It should be noted that Tk’abbir cannot successfully mate within their same pair.

Aging
Tk’abbir can live for around 100 years, achieving maturity in 1 year. Tk’abbir that are born, instead of spawned, will always be born in pairs from a single seed. Many Tk’abbir will take on the signs of age common in plants, be it yellowing of leaves, loss of limbs, etc.

Abilities
Plant oriented nourishment – Tk’abbir can achieve nourishment from the sun, from water, and from the consumption of minerals. Some do this through temporary rooting in soil, others will physically consume soil, or traditional food.
Plant oriented regeneration – Tk’abbir can regenerate large portions of their bodies if they still have access to nutrition, sunlight, and water.

Languages
Tk’ab – A language made of a combination of spoken word and plant pheromones. This is a side by side language, so that one pair of Tk’abbir may speak simultaneously to another pair.

Tk’abbir Native – This language allows the Tk’abbir to speak through pheromones with the plants that they originated from. And while it is physically done through pheromones, their brains translate it into a context they understand.

Stone Bones

“If you find yourself stuck between a Stone Bone and a hard place, make your peace.” ~Bob the Human

Stone Bones

It is commonly believed that the many mountains of Owasiwa used to be individual peaks, disconnected, and people could travel freely around them to distant lands. But soon, these same people began to harm the mountains, carving deep into them, threatening to crumble them. So the mountains decided to protect themselves, and began to spawn many peoples and creatures. As these creatures grew overtime, the mountains also grew bigger and stronger, until the chain that surrounds Owasiwa became impassible. The Stone Bones are one of the oldest of races, and many of their stories of old reach back to when the mountains stood alone. The mountains are their ancestral home and they protect it with a ferocity often unmatched.

Physical Appearance

Stone Bones come in a wide variety of appearances based on the mountain range they hail from. However, a few things they all share are a stout, muscular, bipedal body. They can range from about 5 foot tall to 9 foot tall based on origin. The shorter Stone Bones tend to be from the lower foothills of the mountains, with the taller ones living further up the peaks. They have large, crushing teeth for crushing stone. Their bones and nails are made up of an alloy of the various metals they’ve consumed through their lives, their muscles and skin being more akin to living stone. Their bodies are cool to the touch, and they do not have any sort of blood or similar substances. Their skin comes in the colors of the stone from where they grew up, though if they consume enough of another source of stone, they will begin changing colors to match.

Psychology

Stone Bones typically have a tribal mindset with a hierarchy of cultural veneration. To them, the mountains (and by extension, stone and metal) are the most important things in their lives. They will protect their mountains with the entirety of their beings. After that, loyalty is tied to their local village and families. Beyond that, Stone Bones vary greatly depending on the village they come from, some being peaceful crafters and others being blood thirsty warriors.

Reproduction

Stone Bones are single sexed but have adopted many genders due to the presence of other races and culture, and these genders are often changing constantly based on the mood of the individual Stone Bone. Stone Bones reproduce by carving out a cave into the mountain chain their race hails from and entering a deep, meditative trance within it for a full season. Afterwards, a stone will appear in the cave, and must remain there, and begin growing over the course of five years. Upon reaching five years, the stone will awaken, forming a baby Stone Bone.

Aging

Stone Bones can live for many hundreds of years, and some think potentially indefinitely but this hasn’t been confirmed. Many of the eldest Stone Bones tend to become hermetic, disappearing into the mountains to produce more of their own kind but keep a distance from societies. It is quite common for new Stone Bone children to be left on doorsteps, gifted by these hermits.

Abilities

Ability to consume stone, metals, gems, minerals, etc for nourishment.
Great strength and durability for their size

Languages

Stonetongue (a common tongue among the many villages of Stone Bones)
Individual languages or dialects specific to a village or settlement

Suntouched

“You can lead a Suntouched to water, but you can’t make it drink like a normal person. Damn feet drinkers.” ~Bob the Human

Suntouched

Long before Aila became corrupted by The Lost One, it gave life to many of the races that make up Owasiwa. One of the most prominent of these are the Suntouched, beings spawned from the fertile soil that make up the shores. The Suntouched became one of the most populous races and helped to found Oasis, many refusing to ever travel far from their beloved lake.

Physical Appearance

Suntouched all come in shades of brown, typically darker if they are well hydrated. While well hydrated, their skin appears like many of the smooth skin races that exist in Owasiwa, but if they dry out, one can tell they are formed by extra fine particles of sand and silt. Suntouched do not have a universal physical shape, though bipedal is quite common among them due to their proximity to many other bipedal races in Oasis. The physical shape of the Suntouched slowly shifts over the life of a Suntouched to better reflect how they feel they look or should look. For some, this might mean a shift to an animal shape, for others, it might be growing extra limbs. This shift cannot be manually controlled by the Suntouched, and happens over the course of seasons and years typically. The only known rapid shifts have happened after extremely traumatizing events, and often leave the Suntouched appearing damaged from mental scarring.

Psychology

Suntouched are a proud race, with a long memory. Many of their kind feel they are the perfect union of the Three; Sun, water, and sand. This feeling of superiority, as well as their long presence in Owasiwa and large population, have often led to many of their kinds finding their way into leadership positions in Oasis. The Suntouched are also responsible for the Law of Water, the inherent belief that all water cannot be owned by any and must be available to any and all. Being so populous and ancient though, the Suntouched have become just as varied of mindset and personality as any other.

Reproduction

The Suntouched have unique sexes to the individual. Each individual Suntouched is its own sex and may reproduce with any other Suntouched, singularly or plural. Suntouched don’t typically take on genders, believing the individual to be above such things. Reproduction of Suntouched can only occur in Lake Aila, while the sun is present. Typically Suntouched will have a large, public orgy in the shallow waters of the Lake, one that all races are invited to participate in. For the Suntouched, the physical act of copulation is unnecessary, but still partaken in. Rather, all that is needed to reproduce is for two or more Suntouched to be in the waters together, with a desire to reproduce. After the orgy is finished, child Suntouched will begin walking out of the waters in roughly two years time following an orgy, and are typically adopted by the first Suntouched to come across them. Suntouched maintain large families, but without familial names, believing they are all one large family.

Aging

The Suntouched live endlessly so long as they have access to sunlight and water, of any kind. They take on no physical features of aging if they have regular access to these two things. However, if they are deprived of either for more than a few days, they age rapidly. Their entire form begins to become covered in cracks and crumbles, and if it continues, they will quickly deteriorate into a pile of sand.

Abilities

Uncontrolled shape shifting
Able to subsist solely on sunlight and water
Slow regeneration of wounds if given access to sunlight and water
Can only be killed by complete dehydration or denied access to sunlight

Languages

Sunspeak is their native tongue. Nearly all Suntouched will refuse to speak Sunspeak to non-Suntouched, and they will often only speak Sunspeak to Suntouched.

Common was invented by Suntouched so as to be able to better speak with non-Suntouched. Despite having invented the language, by combining parts of many other languages in the region, many feel it to be beneath them.

Yaxaas

“If you ever wish to visit the Viridescent Shield, find a Yaxaas guide. There is no creature there that wouldn’t stop to think before attacking one first.” ~Bob the Human

Yaxaas

The Yaxaas were a product of intense evolution of species within the Viridescent Shield. For centuries, there was a rapid evolutionary arms race among many species there, and it seemed that Yaxaas had won out. They founded many villages within the Shield, and until the most recent century, reigned supreme. However, over the last hundred years, species began evolving to hunt down Yaxass specifically, causing a schism in the crocodilian race. Some believe that settling into villages has made them weak and doomed the race, while others think the strength in numbers will be their only way of survival. Their numbers have begun greatly diminishing in recent times, leaving only the strongest of them.

Physical Appearance

Yaxaas are a bipedal, crocodilian race. They can get to about 6 feet tall while standing, though their length is greatly increased by their tail. Their backs and outer portions of their limbs are covered in dense, armored scales. Their undersides have paler, softer scales. They typically come in colors ranging from dark green to dark brown to black. They have a mouth full of sharp teeth, and sharp claws on their hands and feet. Snout size and shape will vary based on heritage.

Psychology

Yaxaas have almost always known a life of mortal combat with the dangers of the Shield. Their various cultures have developed around creating the mightiest of warriors and survivalists. They believe themselves to be superior to all others because of their combative nature. Yaxaas are quick to fight, not needing a reason beyond the love of it. Many of them tend to eschew things that could be interpreted as weak, unnecessary, or impractical. Nurturing is not common among them, believing that the strongest will always survive.

Reproduction

Yaxaas have two sexes, male and female. The male and female will mate, typically in water, in a loud and violent manner. Typically they will mate many times in a short span in order to guarantee fertilization of eggs. The female will then construct a nest and lay eggs. Incubation typically takes about a season before baby Yaxaas are born.

Aging
Upon being born, they are left to their own devices, not protected or cared for by their parents. They become sexually mature at twenty years, and can live for up to 150 years typically. They continue to grow during this time, but the rate of growth decreases sharply upon reaching maturity.

Abilities

Amphibious Prowess – The Yaxaas are equally capable of motion and their sensory perceptions when on land as well as in water. They are not diminished in any way when transition from either environment.

Languages

Yaxaan – a clicking and croaking language spoken by nearly all Yaxaas.

Human

“We are clearly the most superior race in Owasiwa. And we are also alone in that thinking.” ~Bob the Human

Human

Humans appeared around one hundred years ago in the year 5913, when a water mining crew broke through the hardpan in the Barrens, and discovered a massive cave system. Inside were people, sickly pale skin, fair eyes, scattering away from the sunlight streaming in like rats. They were disgusting creatures, clearly not having spent a day under the warmth of the Sun Mother. But they were plentiful and seemed quick enough to learn our language, albeit with the coercion of our spears. It was learned that they called themselves Humans. Their stories that they shared spoke of them having lived in a distant land many generations ago, but knew not how they came to be trapped in this cavern of theirs. They held no religion, had weak, basic forms of magic, and knew nothing of the Behemoths the Nomads worship. Those who wished to leave the caverns did so and they were escorted back to the capital to join those in the Fringes, where they began to assimilate into the Oasis culture. But the poor, pale creatures are still struggling to adapt to a world with so much sunlight, so their pale skins often force them to take work at night or indoors. Pitiful things, many think it may have been best to have never discovered them nor their caves.

Physical Appearance

Most humans, male and female, range from 5 feet to 6.5 feet in height at maturity. When they were first discovered, they were all pale skinned, pale haired, pale eyes, but as they’ve grown more accustomed to life in the sands, they’ve begun adapting to come in darker hues of skin, eyes, and hair. Being new to Oasis, most of them are still impoverished, often living in shacks in the Fringes and wearing old, stained and torn rags.

Psychology

Humans are still often viewed as a lesser than species. A disgusting though interesting novelty, whose numbers are far smaller than the majority of the other races in Owasiwa. While humans in Oasis are protected by the law as many others, blind eyes are often turned away from them and persecution of them is not unheard of. Many of the humans are still trying to find acceptance and belonging into the culture, and often try to do whatever is needed to achieve that. Still, many others simply wish to be left alone, to try and build a more comfortable life in this new land of plenty.

Reproduction

Humans come in two sexes typically, though not exclusively, and reproduce through paired mating of one male and one female, with the female carrying the child(ren) for 9 months. It has been discovered that humans seem able to reproduce with every race in Owasiwa to create fertile hybrids. These hybrids, regardless of the non-human parent, typically maintain the lifespan and general size and shape limitations of humans, and are simply enhanced to seem more like the non-human parent.

Aging

Humans typically live to their 80s if well fed and cared for, though some can live to be 100 or so.
They mature into adulthood at 18, and reach elderly status around 60.

Abilities

Omni-Reproduction – Humans are able to reproduce with any race in Owasiwa to produce hybrids that can also reproduce to produce even more hybrids.

Languages

Cave-Tongue – A language of clicks and wet noises made to communicate in the dangerous caves humans came from.
Common – The language often learned by humans assimilating into Oasis culture.
